AI Navigators

Hawai‘i Center for AI is seeking enthusiastic AI Navigators to volunteer their time and expertise to help residents of Hawai‘i get started on their AI journeys.

About the opportunity

AI Navigators will be instrumental in delivering AI outreach sessions across the Hawaiian Islands. We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about working with the public and eager to learn about AI. We will provide comprehensive training to all our volunteers, so no prior knowledge of AI is required. However, an ideal candidate will have a background in education or training, and a strong desire to make a positive impact on their community.

Volunteer responsibilities

  • Deliver AI outreach sessions for your local area in the Islands
  • Attend and assist online training sessions provided by Hawai‘i Center for AI
  • Be an ambassador for responsible AI, the Center, and Hawai‘i’s future!

Volunteer qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be a full-time resident of Hawai‘i
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Must pass a standard background check
  • Prior experience in a field such as small business, healthcare, Hawaiian culture and history, Kupuna care, or education is a plus
  • Passion for technology and a strong interest in learning about AI is a must

Online Communities Coordinator

Calling passionate tech enthusiasts and community builders! Do you have a knack for online spaces, thrive in a collaborative environment, and are fascinated by the potential of AI? The AI Center for Hawai’i (HCAI) seeks a dedicated Online Communities Coordinator to join our team and spearhead vibrant online communities around AI.

Be the heart of our online presence:

  • Moderate and cultivate safe, engaging spaces on Discord, fostering meaningful discussions and connections within the HCAI community.
  • Take the reins on HCAI’s Github Organization: Set up repositories, manage access, and ensure smooth operations for our development community.

AI Incubator Business Mentor

The Business Mentor is a vital volunteer role within the Hawai‘i Center for AI Incubator, providing invaluable guidance and expertise to participants as they develop their AI-powered business ventures. This high-profile position offers a unique opportunity to engage with Hawai’i’s vibrant business community, shape the future of AI innovation, and contribute to the growth of the local economy.

Responsibilities:

  • Business Strategy: Advise participants on developing sound business strategies, including market analysis, competitive positioning, and financial modeling.
  • Product Development: Provide insights on product-market fit, customer acquisition, and scaling strategies.
  • Mentorship: Offer personalized guidance and support to participants, helping them navigate the challenges of building and launching AI-powered businesses.

  • Demo Day: Participate in the Demo Day showcase, providing feedback and evaluation of participant projects alongside a distinguished panel of judges.

Additional Information:

This is an unpaid, volunteer position with a flexible time commitment. Mentors are expected to dedicate approximately 2-4 hours per week (for up to 22 weeks) to mentoring activities, including virtual meetings, email correspondence, and participation in Demo Day. While the position is primarily remote, West Coast-based mentors are welcome to apply.

Incubator Technical Fellow: AI Integration (Part Time, Contract)

The AI Integration and Applications Specialist plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between AI models and real-world applications. This role is responsible for guiding participants in integrating AI capabilities into their projects, leveraging existing APIs and cloud-based services. The ideal candidate possesses expertise in working with various APIs, app development and deployment, a deep understanding of cloud-based AI platforms, and a passion for helping others harness the power of AI.

Commitment:

This is a contract position with a 22-week commitment, broken down as follows:

  • Curriculum Development: 4-week part-time (20 hours per week)
  • AI Deep Dive: 2-week onsite intensive instruction
  • Office Hours: 15 weeks (8 hours per week, virtual or onsite, flexible hours)
  • Demo Day Preparation and Execution: 1 week

The Technical Fellow will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the development of wide-ranging new AI projects in Hawai‘i within an innovative and high-profile organization. Additionally, Technical Fellows will find the Incubator to be an unparalleled opportunity to broaden their skills and experience across various industries and application challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: Collaborate with the AI/ML Technical Fellow and Program Director to design and develop a comprehensive curriculum focused on AI integration and API utilization.
  • Instruction: Deliver engaging and informative instruction on AI integration strategies, API selection, cloud-based AI services, and best practices for deploying AI solutions.
  • Mentorship: Provide expert guidance to participants in selecting and utilizing appropriate APIs for their projects, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems.
  • Technical Support: Troubleshoot technical challenges related to API integration, data pipelines, and cloud-based AI deployments.
  • Community Building: Foster a collaborative learning environment where participants can share knowledge and learn from each other’s experiences with AI integration.

Qualifications:

  • Strong technical expertise in software development, API integration, and cloud-based technologies.
  • Full-stack development and deployment experience using JavaScript or Python (preferably comfort with both.)
  • Experience working with various AI APIs and cloud-based AI platforms.
  • Excellent teaching and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Passion for empowering others to leverage AI to solve real-world problems.
  • A Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (postdoctoral candidates are also welcome) is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree is required.

Compensation:

  • $10,000-$20,000 stipend based on experience and travel requirements to cover honorarium, travel, and accommodation expenses.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in Machine Learning, AI, or a related field (postdoctoral candidates are also welcome).
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of various AI models, including neural networks, decision trees, and support vector machines.
  • Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Excellent teaching and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and concisely.
